In the deepest, darkest, blackest of prisons four young Jedi hid alone and frightened. Their breath crystallising in the freezing air.

*thump*

“It’s dark, Fitz.”

“I know it’s dark Alfric, but Kirshoff is trying to get us out of here.”

*thump*

“…and it’s cold!” Alfric’s voice rose plaintively through the darkness.

*thump*

“We’re all cold, Alfric.” Fitz’s voice sounded tired and more then a little frustrated.

“I bet Kirsh isn’t cold.”

The thumping noise stopped.

“No, but I am sore.” A much deeper voice answered.

“Give it up Kirsh, the door ain’t budging,” Fitz said from the darkness.

“How are we going to get out?” Alfric asked worried.

“I don’t know Alfric…” Fitz sounded worried

There was a moment’s pause only broken by the resumed thumping of Kirsh against the door and then Alfric’s voice again squeaked out of the darkness.

“but I really don’t like the dark, Fitz.”

“We know Alfric.” Fitz’s voice wavered with frustration.

More silence in which Kirsh thumped against the door in vain.

“What if we never get out?” Alfric asked pleadingly.

“Shut up.” Fitz growled from the darkness

“And then they never find us.” his voice started to wail.

“Shut up!”

“And we all freeze to death.” Alfric’s voice squeaked on the last word, betraying his terror.

“Shut up! Shut up! SHUT UP!” Fitz’s voice crackled hysterically on the last note as a wan yellow light flickered into existence in the corner. All eyes shifted to the corner where a tiny blonde human girl pulled her face away from the tiny torch she was holding.

“Sorry.” She murmured softly, “I forgot I had it.”

“It’s okay Ash-lee.” Kirsh’s voice rumbled from the darkness. The light moved around the door frame and then up to illuminate four pale scared looking faces.

“There is no way out” Ash-lee confirmed, “except through this door.”

“At least we’re safe in here.” Kirshoff said calmly.

“Safe? Yeah, let’s just die of cold instead.” Alfric’s voice now had a definite quaver.

“Well, we are safe for the moment, they can’t find us in here,” Kirshoff’s normally calm voice rose an octave “and I’m sure someone will find us after it’s over.”

“They’ll find us.” Ash-lee said strongly. The light swung around revealing Fitz sitting
quietly atop a box, his eyes closed.

“What are you doing?” Alfric asked going from quavering to indignation, “this isn’t a time to meditate you know.”

“I’m contacting my master, he taught me how to do this last week.” Fitz replied opening his eyes, “I just need to get the focus right.”

“You can’t contact your master by meditating” Alfric’s voice was scornful.

“No, he’s right, Master Finn mentioned something about this.” Kirshoff’s said from the door. “Maybe I should try too.” There was a creak as Kirshoff sat down and closed his eyes. Then the light swayed and went down too as Ash-lee sat as well.

“You’re all being silly,” Alfric said, “this isn’t going to work. We need to find another way out.”

“There is no other way,” Fitz said without opening his eyes.

Muttering under his breath, Alfric stared at his friends.

A minute passed and then another, filled with nothing but the rasping breathing of the four small Jedi.

“This is silly.” Alfric said scornfully, “get off the box Fitz.”

“It’s working,” Fitz replied calmly.

“No, it isn’t. Now get off the box!” He grabbed Fitz’s collar and despite being the smallest of the four, almost hauled him off the box.

“What are you doing?” Fitz shouted

“You’re just wasting time,” Alfric shouted back, “We’re going to die. Why can’t you understand that!”

“Shuddup Alfric” Fitz voice sounded hoarse in the darkness, “Jus’ shut it.”

The fist came out of no-where. One moment Fitz was standing and the next he was lying on the cold ground his lip smarting. “You…” Launching himself of the ground Fitz tackled Alfric into the wall of their prison. His small fists hammering into anything he could reach.

Three Jedi Masters raced down the hall, robes streaming behind them.

“Did you get…” Jedi Master Jed Treywilden asked breathlessly.

“Yes, I didn’t know they could do that though. I mentioned it to Kirshoff once, that he could reach me, but I didn’t expect him to be able to do it, ” Master Finn responded. The small twilek was unable to hide the pride on her face. A moment later that smile faltered and the three Jedi almost paused midstep. “Did you feel that?” Finn asked.

“I did. Confusion and a whole lot of anger. They're in trouble,” Jed responded worriedly, “We should hurry.”

“This way,” Master Vivteni pointed down a corridor. People stopped and turned as the three masters as they flew by. Finally they stopped in front of a large, heavy looking metal door.

“You ready?” Jed asked, “We don’t know what we’ll encounter in there.”

The two other Jedi Masters nodded in unison.

“Let’s go.” Jed said hauling the door back.

*

Four startled pale faces stared up as the door suddenly slammed open on its hinges, their eyes blinking furiously in the sudden onslaught of light. The two parties regarded each other in complete silence for a moment or two. Then Kirshoff released Fitz from where he had been holding him off the ground and Ash-lee took her arms from Alfric’s waist. Fitz’s nose was bleeding and a new bruises were beginning to form on Alfric’s face. All four looked shamefully away from the amused and concerned glances of the Jedi Masters. Carefully the four youngsters stepped from their metal prison out into the free world. Nothing was said as the seven Jedi carefully made their way up the stair away from the scene.

“I’m almost afraid to ask,” Jed said finally breaking the silence, as he turned to his padawan, “but what were you doing in the refectory freezer?”

Fitz looked up with embarrasment, holding his sleeve to his still bleeding nose.

“Would you believe hide and seek?”
